At a Knights of Columbus funeral or wake, the Fourth Degree Color Corps performs a ceremonial present sword salute using the manual of the sword outlined in the Fourth Degree Color Corps Drill Manual.
How to Execute the Present Sword Salute
- Carry Sword (Starting Position): Hold the sword vertically in the right hand. Keep the flat side of the blade against the right shoulder, with the arm extended down and the grip held by the thumb, forefinger, and third finge
- Raise the Sword (Count One): On the command or signal, raise the right elbow. Bring the sword up in front of the center of your face or chin, keeping the blade straight and vertical.
- Rest Against the Body (Count Two): Tuck the right elbow inward against your side or chest. The hilt is held roughly at chin or eye level with the blade pointing straight up
- Order/Return Sword: From the present position, return the blade to the carry position or order sword (point down at a 45-degree angle in front of the right leg) depending on the liturgical cue
Key Moments During Funerals and Wakes
- Wake Postings: When guards draw swords and face the casket, they execute the sword salute before posting at the ends of the casket.
- Processions: Sir Knights use the sword salute as the casket passes or when entering/exiting the church near the altar.
- Mass & Consecration: Per protocol, the Honor Guard maintains strict stillness during the Consecration and does not perform active sword movements that disrupt the liturgy.
